Thursday January 9, 2014 - Pottsville & Yuengling Brewery

MARK will take the Wanderers on the Yuengling Brewery Hike in Pottsville. He tries to do this traditional hike annually for the BCHC members. We’ll start at the Brewery by taking their tour and then hike uptown to Grandma’s Restaurant for lunch and return downtown for a total ~ 3 miles.

Thursday December 19, 2013 - Wolf's Hollow Park

MARGARET will lead a ~ 6 mile hike in Wolf’s Hollow County Park. This new park of Chester County dates back to a 1681 land grant from William Penn. We will hike on various, well maintained, trails through hollows and over ridges. Lunch is optional later.

Thursday December 5, 2013 - Nolde Forest

HERB has planned and will lead a 5 – 6 mile hike at the Nolde Forest Environmental Center. Come out to see Nolde in late fall. We will shuttle hikers to the back of the park to start the hike. We should get some good views from the overlooks and enjoy the walk through the pine forest. We will also check out the mansion garden, hear a brief history of the area and see if we can find the “Lone Pine”. Lunch afterwards is optional.

KAY will lead us on a hike of ~5 miles in Wyomissing. We will be along the Wyomissing Creek and on trails, roads and fields of the area and also through the pine forest. Thursday November 21, 2013 - French Creek

CLYDE will lead a five mile hike in French Creek State Park. We begin by meandering over the 18 hole ‘DISC GOLF” course (with Frisbees to throw!). Afterwards the group will explore the trails on Mount Pleasure, which is where the disc golf course is located. There is NO HUNTING where we are hiking because of the ongoing activity. Lunch is optional after the hike.

Thursday November 14, 2013 - Leaser Lake

KAY & EDNA will lead a 4 – 5 mile hike at Leaser Lake in Lehigh County. We will trek the newly completed trail that circumnavigates the lake. The terrain is mostly through fields and woodland with a few short hills. Some areas may be muddy along creek banks. There are rewarding, nice views of the lake.

Thursday November 7, 2013 - Swatara State Park

DAVE will lead a ~ 6 mile hike in SWATARA STATE PARK. This hike will begin at the Swope’s Valley Road parking area. We will trek west on the improved rails to trail to the new four span Swatara Creek Bridge. Then, cross the bridge to Old State Road, turn left and travel east on the newly reworked road to Bordner Cabin. Agriggs Falls is seen from the cabin window. We continue our walk to Swope’s Valley Road, turn left heading back to our starting point and parking area.

Thursday October 31, 2013 - Reading Parks

BARBARA will lead the CITY PARKS HIKE of 5-6 miles. This will be a circuitous hike starting at City Park and walking to the memorial section. Then, continuing to Pendora Park and on to Mineral Springs Park. Here we will wend our way to Egelman’s Park Dam and follow a fire trail to the Pagoda. We will return to our starting point by roads and streets. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

NOTE: No costumes or masks are necessary, just your usual hiking clothing and your usual face is more than sufficient!

Thursday October 24, 2013 - Coventry Woods

LES will lead a ~ 5 mile hike in COVENTRY WOODS. This is a circular hike around the perimeter of much of the original boundaries of this park. We begin on the new mile long Great Oak Trail, just opened this year. It connects to Furnace Trail where we follow several existing trails climbing to and crossing the ridge and descending to Rock Run at the base of the opposite side. We parallel Rock Run for a quarter of a mile and begin a slow ascent back to the ridge through woods and fields before turning east. When we reach the Chestnut Hill parking area we begin a one mile descent to our starting point. There are some steep climbs to the ridge initially.

MEET: 10:00 A.M. @ Main lot at Coventry Woods.

DIRECTIONS 1: Take Rte. 724 east from Birdsboro. About three quarters of a mile past River Bridge Rd. (The road/bridge leading to Douglassville where a detour currently exists; you cannot cross from Rte. 422 to Rte. 724 at Douglassville at this time), turn right onto Unionville Rd. All Type Fence is located at the intersection of Rte. 724 & Unionville Rd. Follow Unionville Rd. 2.1 miles past Temple Church and Shenkel Church. Turn right at St. Peter’s Rd., then after about half a mile turn left into Coventry Woods at Fernbrook Lane. Parking is just over the crest of the hill.

DIRECTIONS 2: From Rte. 23 take St. Peter’s Rd. through St. Peter’s Village and continue for about 3 more miles on St. Peter’s Rd. until you see Fernbrook Lane on the left, then turn right into Coventry Woods.

Thursday October 17, 2013 - Jeff's Swamp

DAVE will lead a ~ 6 mile hike to JEFF’S SWAMP from the Western Schuylkill County village of Lincoln. This moderate hike will descend Broad Mountain on a dirt road to a break in Sharp Mountain. Passing through the break we will enter the swamp near this point. There is a Pine Plantation, Hemlock Bog, large Artesian spring, open swamp views and DeHaas Run. While descending the mountain we will visit a large river of rocks similar to Hawk Mountain. Then, return to our starting point and a short shuttle back to our cars. Wear waterproof boots.

At signs for I-81 turn left to large parking area on left just after ramp for I-81 north. Park in the lot to carpool ~ 3.5 miles to Lincoln.

GERRY & WILLIE will lead a 5 – 6 mile hike on various trails in Sweet Arrow Lake Park. This is a lovely Schuylkill County Park and we will view the lake, gazebo, wildlife blind, remains of a historic dam and butterfly gardens. It is a beautiful area to hike and we hope for a beautiful autumn day.

HERB will lead a 5 – 6 mile fall fun hike in the Amish Country of Lancaster County. We should be able to watch the Amish farmers bringing in the crops. The trek will start at Pool Forge Park where the group will walk through the covered bridge and meander on various back country roads. We will pass a haunted mansion, stop at the Village Bakery and briefly hear the story of the Pool Forge Iron Plantation.

Thursday September 12, 2013 - Reading

GERRY & WILLIE will lead Part III of the City of Reading’s Statue & Sculpture Walk. We will begin this approximate 5 mile walk at Williams Restaurant, 9th & Exeter Sts., Reading. We will hike north to Albright University Campus viewing several statues. Then head south visiting a couple other parks and finally arriving at City Park viewing and hearing some comments at each piece of art within the park. From here we will return to our starting point and opt for lunch at William’s Restaurant.

LES will lead a hike on NEVERSINK Mountain. The hike begins at the Forest Hills cemetery and will pass the walled pond and the Witches Hat. We cross from the north to the south side of the mountain via the West Woodland trail, and return with views from high above the Schuylkill River via the Neversink South trail. Expected length of this hike is between 5 and 6 miles.

Thursday August 22, 2013 - Maiden Creek

AL will lead a 5 mile hike along the Maiden Creek in Ontelaunee Township. After viewing the spillway of Lake Ontelaunee into the Maiden Creek we will walk on the Freedom Trail through the Blue Falls Picnic Grove. Then cross over Wiley’s Bridge which is scheduled to be demolished by the Township in the fall of this year. This may be the last time we can do this hike. We will continue following the trail to the Berkley Water Works and return. Wear good hiking shoes and carry water, sunscreen and insect repellant.

MARK will lead a hike of 4 to 6 miles in the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. The hike will be on various woodland trails. Wearing hiking boots, especially if we have had an abundance of rain prior to this hike, is important since we may end up meandering in mud at some locations. This is a great place to see wild fowl and flowers and Mark is quick in identifying them for us. A lunch stop afterwards is optional.

‘YOU’ will lead a hike not to exceed 5 miles somewhere in the vicinity. ‘YOU’ will be chosen by the attending group’s unanimous decision. Then, the chosen leader will determine the trails in the area to be hiked. Dress appropriately, wear sturdy shoes and carry water. An optional lunch stop after the hike will be determined by the group.

Thursday July 25, 2013 - Port Clinton Towpath

AL will lead a 4 + mile hike in Port Clinton. This hike will be mainly on the old Schuylkill Canal Tow Path Trail in Port Clinton. The trek is woodland walking along the Schuylkill River. We also will follow an uphill trail along a feeder stream which empties into the Schuylkill River. Then we will road walk by a very old cemetery which we can explore on our descent to the village of Port Clinton. Wear good hiking boots and carry water, sun screen and perhaps insect repellant. Lunch at the new Shoey Diner in Shoemakersville is optional after the hike.

Thursday June 27, 2013 - Appalachian Trail 'Trail Magic'


ELLEN and HERB are planning to do “Trail-Magic”. This event will take place in the Blue Mountains on the Appalachian Trail north of Reading. It will be a combination of food give-away for the through hikers and a picnic and hike for the Berks Wanderers. Some of us may hike 5-6 miles on the AT to the spectacular Bear Rocks overlook and/or to Bake Oven Knob. The event will be held rain or shine.

MARK BANKES will be taking us through a Horseshoe Trail Clean-up. This occurs on the section of the trail that our club periodically maintains. Thursday May 30, 2013 - Neversink Mountain



LES leads the NEVERSINK MOUNTAIN LAUREL HIKE of up to 6.5 miles. The Mountain Laurel may still be in bloom. We will walk through many sections of Neversink covered with Mountain Laurel. While this should be a scenic hike, there will be a number of difficult hill climbs. If the weather is humid, expect a strenuous hike. You will need water.

GERRY, a “Country Girl” will lead a “City Sculptor Walk”. We will be walking from statue to statue along the trails and sidewalks in downtown Reading. This will be a two and a half hour, leisurely paced walk with comments at each sculpture, church or building viewed. It will be a day to appreciate all the art and architecture Reading has to offer.

Thursday May 16, 2013 - Swatara Furnace

DAVE will lead an ~ 6 mile hike to Swatara Furnace and Jeff’s Swamp. This hike begins in a game commission parking lot in western Schuylkill County. Swatara Furnace remains in good condition and foundations of other structures are present. Also, see the Iron Master’s mansion and a log cabin made of Chestnut wood. View the High Bridge Dam. Follow a woods road along the west branch of Fishing Creek taking us to Jeff’s Swamp. Return to starting point.

HERB has planned a leisurely, wildflower walk in our nearby French Creek State Park. We will trek in an area, not often visited, to see how many unusual flowering plants we can find and enjoy viewing them. Come out for a 5 to 6 mile hike and see Baptism Creek/French Creek blooming in the beauty of spring. There are some rocks and hills to negotiate and there also will be springs and small streams gushing with snow melt, but that adds to the overall beauty of the season. You may want to bring an extra pair of shoes for a planned, optional lunch stop afterwards.

Thursday April 25, 2013 - Lake Ontelaunee

RICHARD will reattempt to lead the washed out hike of Jan.31st. This is an approximate 5 mile hike on the east side of scenic Lake Ontelaunee. We will trek on an old abandoned railroad siding that once served the Evansville Cement Works along the Maiden Creek and continue on animal trails to an eventual grand lookout of the lake. Carry water and wear sturdy shoes. We may encounter wet areas. A lunch stop afterwards is optional.

Thursday April 18, 2013 - Adamstown

GERRY & WILLIE will lead a 4 – 5 mile hike in Adamstown and in Stoudtburg Village. This hike will be through Adamstown on sidewalks and trails and we will explore the village while taking a break looking (shopping?) in the market. Toilets are available in the market. Hope for pleasant weather; don’t expect snow, but possible April showers, carry an umbrella or rain gear.

Thursday April 11, 2013 - Mt Gretna

MARGARET will lead a ~ 7-mile hike at Governor Dick Hill near Mt. Gretna. While searching for Jack-in-the-pulpits, we will hike around trails in the Clarence Schock Memorial Park and climb the fire tower, if we dare. Last year we were treated to many spring blooms in this area. Hopefully; we can luck in again.

Thursday April 4, 2013 - Exeter Scenic River Trail

KAY will lead the Exeter Scenic River Trail hike of ~5 miles. We will hike from Gibraltar Road to Forest Hills Cemetery and back. We should see many wildflowers in bloom this time of year.

RANDY & SHELBY will lead a hike of ~ 5 miles in and around the Springton Manor Farm. We will hike the various trails and take time to see the new born animals at the farm complex, perhaps piglets, lambs and hopefully more. Carry water and a snack, if you wish; however, lunch at the Windmill Restaurant, or another, is an option afterwards. Rain or snow would cancel this event.

Thursday March 21, 2013 - Rausch Gap

MARGARET will lead a hike of 9+ miles, while welcoming the arrival of spring, by hiking to the newly restored Rausch Gap shelter via the upper and lower railroad beds to reach Rausch Gap. We should be prepared for snowy, icy or muddy conditions depending on the weather. Wear sturdy hiking boots, carry water and dress accordingly. Lunch later is optional.

GERRY & WILLIE will lead a 5 – 6 mile road hike in the Shoemakersville area. We will hike through the countryside of Shoey and Perry Township with its ups and downs. The farmer allows walkers to cross the field for FREE, but the bull CHARGES, so we will stick to the roads.

Thursday March 7, 2013 - Exeter/Amity Roads

LES will lead a 6 mile road hike in Exeter and Amity Townships to view historical sites. The hike will begin at the Daniel Boone Homestead and follow rural roads, while taking in the country scenery. In addition to the historical buildings at the Homestead, we will visit the Exeter Friend’s Meeting House, which is still in use, and the original Brown’s Feed Mill.

MEET: 10:00 A.M. @ Wayside Lodge parking area of the Daniel Boone Homestead.

DIRECTIONS: From Reading, travel east on route 422 and take the 1st left turn after the traffic light at route 345 (the former route 82 to Birdsboro). There is a sign for Daniel Boone Homestead here. Proceed about ¼ mile, cross the west bound lanes of route 422 at the traffic light and continue for about another ½ mile to the Homestead entrance. Wayside Lodge parking is at the 1st left turn after entering the Homestead.

Thursday February 28, 2013 - Schuylkill River Hamburg

DAVE will lead a ~ 4 mile hike along the Schuylkill River to the Kernville Dam. This is a beautiful easy walk along the Schuylkill River to Schuylkill County’s lowest elevation point. This hike is in conjunction with Diakon Living & Learning Walking Club. An afternoon restaurant stop is optional after the hike.

Thursday February 14, 2013 - French Creek

HERB has planned a relatively flat, easy winter, 5 to 6 mile loop hike in, and near French Creek State Park. We will walk along the south side of Hopewell Lake, pass “Beaver Cove” and check out the south shore. We plan to visit the ecologically important Pine Swamp Natural Area, walk through an abandoned primitive camping area and return to our starting point. Some of the walk will be on trails and some on park roads. The park is especially pretty in winter, if we are lucky enough to have light to moderate snow. However; heavy snow or rain would cancel this event. An optional lunch is planned afterwards. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Thursday January 17, 2013 - Birdsboro Watershed

LES will lead a hike of about 6 miles through the Birdsboro Watershed. We will pass the two less scenic lakes in the Watershed and will walk along both sides of the Hay Creek. The hike will begin on the Geigertown side of the Watershed on Hay Creek Rd., then cross the Hay Creek and walk along this scenic creek until we take a trail to the first lake. We follow trails on the hill to the wire bridge at Hay Creek leading to Rustic Picnic Park south of Birdsboro. We do not cross this bridge, but partially retrace our steps by taking a trail to the lake adjacent to the rock climbing area. The last leg of the hike will be on old route 82 aside the Hay Creek back to our starting point. Dress for the weather, wear good boots and orange blaze and carry water.

1st MEET: 9:30 A.M. @ the parking area for the Thun Trail in Gibralter across Route 724 from Turkey Hill.

2nd MEET: 9:50 A.M. @ the parking area across from an old stone house on Hay Creek Rd. (the washed out former route 82). From Geigertown at the intersection of Geigertown Rd. and Hay Creek Rd., this is about 2.8 miles toward Birdsboro. Traveling from the intersection of Hay Creek Rd. and Mullen Hollow Rd., this is about 0.8 mile toward Birdsboro on the former route 82.
