Thursday Oct 18, 2018 - French Creek

HERB has mapped a 4-5 mile easy hike around the Pine Swamp Natural Area in the FCSP. We will walk on the little used Harmonyville Road, the Horse-Shoe Trail and park trails. The leaves may be in full color and falling. A nice view of Mt. Pleasure in fall colors should be visible. There are very few rocks and hills on this shuttle hike! Lunch after is optional.

Thursday Oct 11, 2018 - Pulpit Rock

ED will lead the PULPIT ROCK LOOP HIKE - 5 Moderate miles. A classic hike on our favorite local mountain. We will see hills, rocks, and a great overlook. Optional lunch afterwards at C. J. Hummel's in Lenhartsville.

MEET: 9:00 A.M. @ Hamburg Reservoir parking area at the end of Reservoir Rd. off Old Route 22 ( State Street in Hamburg ), about two miles east of Hamburg opposite St. Paul's Church.

DIRECTIONS: Rt. 61 north, exit to right onto 4th Street. At third traffic light turn right onto State St. ( Old Route 22 ). Proceed about two miles to Reservoir RD. on your left. Follow Reservoir RD. to parking area.

Thursday Oct 4, 2018 - New Hanover Township

LES will lead this 5 +mile shuttle hike exploring roads to the east of our New Hanover hike in August. A portion of this hike approaches Swamp Creek. We visit the location of the Goshenhoppen Folk Festival and the Henry Antes house built in 1736 by a prominent citizen of the era. Optionally, we will do another mile to visit the Bertolet Meeting House.

Thursday Sep 27, 2018 - Schuylkill Haven

GERRY with WILLIE will lead a 5 to 6 mile hike in the Borough of Schuylkill Haven Area. Hiking around the parks, the Island, and along the Schuylkill River on trails and macadam.
Terrain consists of some level and some hills, only one gradual up and down. If you want to eliminate the hills and shorten the distance of the hike, follow Willie. We will see the school and football field where our “Star” athlete, Willie Kramer, played, some years ago. Optional lunch afterwards at the Manheim Diner.

DIRECTIONS: From Blue Marsh travel Rte.183 to Rte. 443, go right at light into Schuylkill Haven. At light at Turkey Hill, turn right, and pass lake, go right and park near rest rooms.

MEET #1 9:15 A.M. @ Redner’s Leesport Market parking lot, if you want to go on Rte. 61 N. Organize yourselves.
DIRECTIONS: From Redner’s Leesport travel Rte. 61 north, drive into Schuylkill Haven to the light in town, turn left onto Rte. 443 and follow thru down town to bridge. Cross over to Turkey Hill at light and turn right past lake and park up at rest rooms.

Thursday Sep 20, 2018 - Welsh Mountain Preserve

HERB expecting the weather to cool down has planned a 4-5 mile hike in the Welsh Mountain Preserve. Fall colors may be showing and the trails on the mountain should present some good views of the Weaverland Valley below. We will avoid the worst rock strewn trails and steepest paths. Perhaps we can find the cave where thieves hid stolen horses! Lunch afterwards is optional.

Thursday Sep 13, 2018 - Douglass Township

LES will take you on a 5.5 mile, primarily road hike through Douglass Township, Berks County. The hike begins at Ironstone Park. Here you can view a high old time trestle bridge still used by the Colebrookdale Railroad. We begin along the Ironstone Creek and follow rural roads, occasionally reencountering the Ironstone Creek. Ultimately, as we approach Route 100, we depart the roadway and walk back a farm lane to the Fritz Burying Ground, a historic colonial era graveyard restored by Douglass Township in the 1990s. The return to the starting point repeats many of the same roads. This hike was done several years ago when the graveyard was covered in snow.

MEET #1: 9:30 A.M. @ Redner's in Douglassville, Routes 422W and 662 for a 6 mile ride to the starting location. Park away from Redner's toward the ACE hardware store.
