Thursday Jan 23, 2020 - Welkinweir

HERB has planned a 4-5 mile hike at Welkinweir Preserve near Pottstown. We will visit the restored mansion, walk through the arboretum and walk on preserve trails and the Horse-shoe Trail. Some of the walk will be on a back road. The mansion is usually closed to the public but they will give us a tour. If able, please bring a small donation as a thank you for opening the mansion.

LES will lead a 5 mile hike beginning from the Thomas P Bentley Nature Preserve. This is a newly opened preserve owned by the French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust near Warwick Park. There will be a 4 mile road walk along scenic historic country roads. Optionally, the Preserve provides a 1 mile wooded trail, if conditions permit. Snow or ice on the roads will cancel this hike.

BEV will lead a shuttle hike from the Dry Brooks Day Use Area at Blue Marsh to Red Bridge Recreation Area; hiking the Blue Marsh Multi-Use, Union Canal Connector, and the Union Canal Towpath totally approx. 5 miles.

LES will lead a 5 mile hike in Bryn Coed Preserve, a new Natural Lands park in northern Chester County. It provides a variety of trails, open and wooded, hilly and flat. All will be experienced on this hike which will be based on the red blaze, but utilize other trails as well. Snow or ice on the roads will cancel this hike.

HERB has mapped a 4-5 mile round trip winter hike on the Welsh Mountains. We will start at the Money Rocks County Park trailhead, hike on park trails and visit Money Rocks, the Welsh Mountain Preserve and the Cockscomb Rocky Ridge. We will hear some new tales of the outlaws who once roamed this area. The trails are rocky but we will avoid the steepest hills and most difficult trails. Lunch afterwards is an option.

Thursday Nov 28, 2019 - Elverson

JODY will lead the “Elverson Turkey Trot” hike, a 3 to 3.5 mile walk in Elverson Borough on Thanksgiving morning. We will walk around Livingood Park and then head down Chestnut Street and follow the old rail bed to Park Avenue. We may look for not-so-wild turkeys along the way. We will then enjoy the quiet streets of the Summerfield development before returning to the park. Lunch afterwards is an option, depending on what is open on Thanksgiving morning.

Thursday Nov 7, 2019 - Swatara Creek

HERB and several hikers suggested we walk the 5-6 mile hike on the Bear Hole Trail in Swatara Creek State Park near Pine Grove. We will start at the Swopes Valley Trailhead, pass the old Bordner Cabin with a waterfalls and stop to look for fossils at the shale pit. We will cross the series of metal bridges and end at the Sand Siding Trailhead. This is a fairly flat hike with few rocks. Lunch after is an option.

Thursday Oct 17, 2019 - Antietam Lake

STEFANIE (Al’s Daughter) will lead a hike in the Antietam area. Today we will walk the trails of Antietam Lake Park. Starting at Antietam Dam we will take the trail up to and around the pond at Angora Fruit Farm. From there we will catch a portion of the Gravity Trail and head up the mountain to List Road. We will then circle around and head back down the mountain via additional multi-use trails, crossing over trickling spring water and eventually coming out at the rear of the Nature Center, just above the parking lot where our cars will be waiting. This hike will be approximately 3 miles; however, be prepared for rocky terrain and a few steep inclines.

HERB has scheduled a 5-6 mile circle hike on the Swatara Creek Rail Trail near Pine Grove. We will start at the Sand Siding Trailhead, cross the spectacular series of bridges, stop at the fossil pit and return to the cars crossing the creek on the AT bridge. This is a fairly flat hike with few rocks. The leaves should be in full autumn color! Lunch after is an option.

BEV will lead the Landingville Marsh Trail which is a flat loop trail alongside the Schuylkill River that includes part of the John Bartram Trail and the foundation for the oldest transportation tunnel in the country. We will then use a little traveled road to the village of Landingville and return via the John Bartram trail. There are no restrooms along the trail. Optional lunch afterwards is to be determined.

HERB has a great idea for an early fall hike. Let's do a 4-5 mile walk at the Warwick County Park and look for fall wildflowers. We will start at the east end of the park, check out the French Creek Horse-Shoe Trail crossing and then walk on the shaded woods trail back and go through the wildflower meadows. There will be one easy stream crossing but, Les has "volunteered" to see all the ladies safely across. Lunch after is an option at St. Peter's Village.

KAY & KATHY will lead COVERED BRIDGE PARK, ALLENTOWN Enjoy a 4.5 mile hike from one covered bridge to another alongside beautiful Jordan Creek. It will be a 38 mile drive to entrance of park. There are both shady and wide open spaces so plan appropriately for weather. Hike will be fairly level walking on park trails and roads.

GERRY & WILLIE will lead 2 different hikes, 2 different areas, only 1 day. We will meet at Cacoosing Park, Sinking Spring and take the trails around the park and ball fields. (Job Johnnies available) Approximately 2 miles in this area. Then, we will travel to the shopping area off Broadcasting Road and park in the lot near 84 or 94 Commerce Drive. Here we will hike the macadam path all around the businesses at Spring Valley area. Approximately 1 ½ to 2 miles in this area. Both will be leisure hikes. BEV says, let’s check out the Union Canal Tunnel in Lebanon and the newly opened section of the Lebanon Valley Rail to Trail. No hills for this hike; distance will be 5 to 6 miles, most of it in shade. Lunch afterwards at the Dutch Way Market in Myerstown.

MIKE will lead a strenuous hike on the Turtle Trail at French Creek State Park for 6.2 miles. We will walk, on the road, ¼ mile to the trailhead for the Turtle Trail. The trail is hilly, narrow and rocky. Hiking boots (not shoes) are recommended. If you have hiking poles and insect repellent or a mosquito net, bring them along. Heavy rain cancels. Did I mention the trail is rocky? Bring an extra pair of shoes to change into after the hike. Your feet will appreciate it. Optional lunch afterwards will be at the Exeter Family Restaurant.

Thursday Aug 8, 2019 - Coventry Woods

LES will lead a hike of about 5 miles in Coventry Woods. From the main parking lot, we will use the Love Valley trail to climb to the ridge, then down the opposite side to Rock Run. After the walk along the creek, we climb back to the ridge and return via the Great Oak trail.

DIRECTIONS 1: Take Rte. 724 east from Birdsboro. About three quarters of a mile past River Bridge Rd (The road/bridge leading to Douglassville.), turn right onto Unionville Rd. All Type Fence is located at this intersection. Follow Unionville Rd. 2.1 miles past Temple Church and Shenkel Church. Turn right at St. Peter’s Rd., then after about half a mile turn left into Coventry Woods (Fernbrook Lane is to the right). Parking is just over the crest of the hill.

DIRECTIONS 2: From Route 23, take St Peter's Rd through St Peter's Village and continue for about 4 more miles on St Peter's Rd. When you see Fernbrook Lane to the left, turn right into Coventry Woods.

HERB has mapped a 4-5 mile moderate circle hike in the Six Penny Creek area of French Creek State Park We will walk through the abandoned picnic and swimming area. Remnants of the old shelters, bathrooms, bathhouse and the dam breast are still visible. Some “old timers” can remember when the area was filled with hundreds of visitors. It should be a cool walk for a hot July day! Lunch afterwards is an option.

Thursday May 16, 2019 - Hibernia Park

HERB has rescheduled the 4-5 mile hike at Hibernia County Park. We will walk in the western part of the park, going through the camping area and visiting the remains of the old iron works. We will pass the historic mansion and walk along the Brandywine Creek. There are some hills and rocks! Lunch afterwards is an option.

Thursday May 9, 2019 - Neversink

LES will lead a 5.5 mile loop hike around the eastern end of Neversink Mountain. We begin with a steep climb, then descend into the glen before another climb to one of the mountain overlooks. Our return is via the north side of the mountain and McElvain's pavilion. Expect numerous hills.

GERRY will lead a 4.5 mile BERNVILLE TOWN & AREA HIKE. We will hike around the dam breast, thru the parks and along streets and sidewalks with a few small hills. If the group wants more, we could explore the cemetery or drive to the Rentschler Arboretum for some trail walking.

Thursday Apr 18, 2019 - Memorial Lake (Indiantown Gap)

BEV will lead a 4 to 5 mile hike around Memorial Lake State Park. We will do most of the trails and a little used road to circle the lake. The trail may be muddy at spots.

Thursday Apr 11, 2019 - Furnace Hills (Ephrata)

HERB has planned a 4-5 mile circle hike in the Furnace Hills Area., We will walk into the former BSA area and explore various woodland trails. We will visit the Eagle Rock overlook search for early spring wildflowers and enjoy the many small streams filled with spring rains. This area has just been opened to hikers by the Natural Lands Trust. Please wear some florescent orange. There are some rocks and hills. Lunch after is an option.

GLENN will lead the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail. Five easy miles out and back on an abandoned rail trail. Bonus for all who wish to visit Keller’s Mill Covered Bridge 1/2 mile from rail trail. Lunch stop afterwards is optional.

Thursday Mar 14, 2019 - Birdsboro Watershed

LES will lead an exploration of some of the more distant trails in the Birdsboro Watershed. We briefly interconnect with more familiar trails to get a winter look at the reservoir. The new French Creek Hopewell Big Woods trailhead that connects to the Schuylkill River Trail will be used to shorten the distance to these trails. Expect about 5 miles of varying terrain. Ice or snow cancels.

MEET: 9:45 A.M. @ the Schuylkill River trailhead in Monocacy. On Route 724, about a mile east of Route 345 and just past Center Rd, take the first left turn, at the former Tim's Ugly Mug, now the Fork & Ale, approximately 58 Campbell Ford Rd, Douglassville. We will shuttle to the start from here.

Thursday Mar 7, 2019 - Scott's Run Lake

HERB has planned a moderate 4-5 miles hike in the Scott's Run Lake area of French Creek State Park. We will take a circle hike on the Horse-shoe Trail, and other park trails and roads. We will walk through two of the organized camping areas, visit the fire tower and return back to our cars. If the maple sugar is running, we will check out the sugar camp along the way. Hibernia County Park closed due to weather. Herb has changed the hike plan and time. We will meet the group in Gibraltar across from Turkey Hill on Route 724 at 10 AM. He has a 4 to 5 mile hike plan

HERB has planned a 4-5 miles easy to moderate walk at Hibernia County Park. Depending on the weather, we will walk on the west side of the park, through the camping area and stop at the visitor center. We will visit the site of the old iron furnace and the dam on the river. Lunch afterwards is an option.

HERB has mapped a 4-5 miles moderate hike at Blue Marsh Lake. We will start from the parking lot near the Stilling Basin, walk on the Tulpehocken Towpath, stopping at a museum and ending at the restored locks. We will then return to our parked cars. (Hint: Since it is Valentine's Day the hike leader would not refuse any Valentines!) Lunch afterwards is an option.

KAY will lead an approx. 6 mile hike in the Blue Marsh Lake area. We will begin at Spring Creek and hike Multi-use Trail to Peacock Road. It will be an in/out hike. A few ups and downs. Hike as far as you wish and turn around or go all the way to Peacock Road. Approximately 6 miles. Hike will cross Spring Creek and follow lake shore for a while. Dress appropriately for weather. Trail may become muddy, if rainy. Call if weather is iffy.
